Membrane Heterogeneity Characteristics Analysis

Analyzed image:
SEM image of Ti plasma precipitation on polyethylene wafer.

Problem solved:
Calculation of parameters that characterize optical heterogeneity of polyethylene wafer including volume fraction of interphase boundaries and background intensity spread.

Solution
Image processing and analysis routine includes the following steps:
Automated contrasting of the source image.
Image segmentation, filtering and skeletonizing. Skeletonized image allows finding the fraction of the image area occupied by interphase boundaries. The fraction is calculated as a ratio of the area occupied by skeletal lines to the total area of the image.
Revealing of the background texture by dilating the skeleton and combining the result of dilation with the initial image. Average spread of intensity within the 10x10 pixel aperture is selected to characterize the background heterogeneity.

Determined parameters:
Volumetric fraction of interphase boundaries, %
Average intensity spread
